Optimism Out of the Ashes

Geneva Anderson, ATM-G, CL

While in Anaheim for the International Convention, one of the candidates for office gave me a button that reads, "I Geneva Anderson am a Relentless Optimist!" Once the initial shock of the Events of September 11 subsided, I began to reflect on the good that could come out of such a horrible tragedy, because, you see, I am a Relentless Optimist! I also believe the Scripture (Romass 8:28) that says "All things work together for good." It does not say "all things are good." The verse says "all things work together for good."
We have already witnessed much good emerging from the ruins:
Americans have been infused with a new pride and sense of patriotism. The epithet "Don't Tread on Me" takes on new significance. People everywhere are recognizing their dependence upon each other for truly, "no man is an island."
As we continue to learn how other Toastmasters and clubs have been directly impacted by these horrendous acts of terrorism, we observe that the groundswell of support for these who have suffered great loss has strengthened the bond we share as fellow Toastmasters.
I have already witnessed Toastmasters discovering new material for impassioned speeches, because none of us has remained unscathed from this debacle. Yet, because of the passions stirred within us, we will be more effective both as speakers and leaders.
Americans have a need to "talk through" their feelings. This is a healthy way of dealing with great trauma. Toastmasters can help. We can extend the hand of friendship and neighbors an audience to listen to their hurts, a platform from which to inspire others while healing themselves, and a family of club members to support and facilitate that healing process. Toastmasters changes lives.
Though buried for a time, The Phoenix is about to emerge. We shall all help to head its wings so that it can soar once more--this time to even greater heights.
Yes, I AM a RELENTLESS OPTIMIST!

District 58 extends sincere sympathy and the assurance of our thoughts and proyers to Melanie Frost, long-time Toastmasters International Headquarters employee, at the loss of her daughter who was a passenger in one of the planes that crashed on September 11.
