Make A Difference
In District 58
By Karen Alexander, DTM
District 58 Governor
Having just returned from my first Toastmaster Internationsl Convention, held in Miami Beach, Florida, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be your 2000-2001 district governor and renewed in my commitment to make a difference in our district. Each day of this convention brought new interests and excitements from the nationally renown speakers and presenters to the individual friends made from places such as Seattle and Singapore. It was truly an incredible week! I invite each and every one of you to join with me next August in Anaheim, California.
This week also gave me a renewed excitement about the energy we have here in District 58. You, as a club member, are our best customer and the best public relations expert we could have. I am continually grateful that you keep me enthused about the endless possibilities we have in this district.
Over the years I have been asked by well meaning family and friends why I joined an organization such as Toastmasters? Why have I stayed in for such a long time? Why do I give so much time and energy to this organization?
The answers are as unique and complex as the many friends that I have made through my service to District 58. The answers are as simple as the life changing benefits that each individual Toastmaster may gain through this experience. These many answers are what do make a difference in District 58.
Each person who takes the dare to step out of his or her own comfort zone will reap the rewards of improved self-esteem, self-awareness, and appreciation for the ability which lies within. I have seen the difference that Toastmasters can and dows make in the lives of numerous individuals.
The goal I hope we share is to have strong, effective, fun, and professional clubs available throughout the state. Clubs ready to welcome anyone who wishes to reap the rewards and make a difference by participating in our Toastmasters experience.
You may be asking, "How can I make a difference?" YOU can make a difference by...
- Inviting a guest to your next meeting
- Greeting visitors and welcoming them to your club
- Being prepared to fulfill your assigned role at each meeting
- Start and end your meeting on time
- Ask visitors to join your Toastmasters club and share this life changing experience
- Attend district training and conferences
Thank you for sharing your unique talents with your clubs. Thank you for participating, for helping, for learning, for growing. Thank you -- for you do Make A Difference in District 58.
