Prison Clubs District 58 Toastmasters May 17, 2019

TODAY’S NEWS

D-58 Toastmasters, Do you want to make a difference ?

Violence is a treatable disease

What we know is that violence is a disease and we can reduce the spread of violence using the same strategies that epidemiologists use to treat other infectious diseases. It’s a simple model: interrupt the spread of violence, treat those at high risk of becoming infected, and change unhealthy community norms.

Inside a Prison Club

By Jodie Randisi, Treasurer, Ridgeland Toastmasters

Prison volunteers have firsthand experience and insight that others don’t have regarding the lives of prisoners, how they’ve gotten to where they are, and how they cope with and accept their crimes. It is easy for to assume these men are evil. What isn’t easy is choosing to remember that there have been circumstances (often unimaginable to us in our secure lives) that have landed these men in prison. For the most part, these men are entirely conscious and aware of their wrongdoing. They are very interested in learning how to turn their mess into a message. With their release in mind, prison club Toastmasters are working to reestablish themselves in their communities and especially within their families.

How does Toastmasters help prisoners?

Until people recognize, embrace, and heal those wounded parts of themselves, they cannot be whole; they cannot heal. However, healing is wired into our DNA. We were born with
everything we need to live and thrive. Willingness to face and embrace pain enables us to grow, evolve, and to become our best selves. Being able to share thoughts, ideas and stories has changed the mindset of prison club members.

Clyde Smith, Connie Buehner, Diana Hardy, and others District 58 Toastmasters have seen inmates go from being unable to express themselves with clarity to being confident speakers, which has helped them relationally as well. That’s why I believe prisons are a great place to cultivate people potential and Toastmasters is ideal soil to grow a crop of better men.

Prison Clubs, Why?

Toastmasters gave me the confidence I need to pursue a business career. I now have hope and courage. I am a positive vocal leader, preparing to be a motivational speaker. I have so much inside of me. I was too shy to let it out. I’m ready to speak to the youth about making good choices before they reach this level.

Meetings are an Oasis of Encouragement

Despite confinement, we meet weekly to share ideas, learn about each other, and regain humanity. Attendance in a prison is subject to many variables not encountered in
the outside world: lockdowns due to stabbings, medical appointments, parole hearings, work assignments, and family visits, all of which occasionally get in the way.

Our meetings are an oasis of encouragement for a brighter future as well as a respite from an otherwise often hostile environment. Meetings become a springboard for frank conversations about faith, fortitude, friendship as well as loss, anger, loneliness and redemption. For men of low to average education, I’m impressed by their deep insights and observations. I wonder whether they have always been so perceptive, or did these insights comes after incarceration.

BASE CAMP MANAGER (BCM)

A team which comprises of Club President, VP Education and Secretaries – your duties

For most clubs, the vice president education (VPE) will be the main actor in the role of Base Camp manager. HOWEVER, BCM is a team effort! The Base Camp Manager helps facilitate your progress by verifying your education, approving requests and more. Because we operate as a team, in the event that a VPE isn’t able to perform these duties, or if a club does not have a VPE, the BCM responsibilities will be fulfilled by the club president or club secretary. The central responsibilities of the BCM include:

  • Approving speeches outside the club
  • Verifying level completion
  • Tracking member progress
  • Verifying project completion for members using printed materials

Lowcountry Leaders Enjoy an Afternoon of Networking

October 9, 2017 by editor

The afternoon of Saturday, September 23rd, was the first ever Toastmasters networking event at Coastal Coffee Roasters in Summerville, South Carolina. Hosted by the Lowcountry Council, the purpose of the event was to provide the opportunity to network with other leaders in the Lowcountry and create a bigger sense of community.

While enjoying some refreshments attendees participated in a team building game, got to know one another, listened to a presentation on how meeting the needs of the members results in distinguished clubs and shared their questions and comments in an open Q&A session. Due to space constraints, this introductory event was open to current Lowcountry DEC leaders and club presidents.

The mission of the council is to convey we are here to support our members by providing additional opportunities outside of the club, where members can ask questions, get help and also have some fun! Preliminary feedback on this pilot event was positive. Mission accomplished! The council is moving ahead with planning more of these events with the next one coming in November.

Managing Conflict Inside and Outside of Toastmasters

June 6, 2017 by editor

We see or experience conflict every day.  At work, your idea or contribution may not be understood and valued the way you feel it should. At home, your child may not see the value of maintaining their belongings in the manner you expect. At sporting events, a referee may make a call that a player thinks was out of line.  In your Toastmasters club, you may have an idea on how to move the club forward that you feel is being overlooked or dismissed by your fellow club member or club leader. OR, maybe you’re a club leader who has club members who tell you they disagree with how you run a club meeting.

A Toastmasters club is no exception to experiencing conflict. As human beings, we often see conflict as a threat.  As Toastmasters, we all joined a club because we wanted to experience personal growth through improving our communication and leadership skills. Part of that personal growth is understanding conflict and then working through instances where you feel like you’re not being heard and/or your needs or the needs of others are not being met. Join Lisa Berry, DTM, in this recorded webinar to gain the knowledge on how to identify, negotiate and build bridges, and not let barriers form during situations of conflict inside and outside of your Toastmasters club.

The Beauty of Table Topics

May 22, 2017 by editor

Cherisse Branch was disappointed being in third place of her division. It seemed an insurmountable deficit with only the interview event remaining. Cherisse had prepared for six months for the South Carolina Plus America Pageant. She started with the Miss Blythewood crown; preparations culminated at a boot camp weekend which prepared participants for the state pageant.

The talent event opened, and since this is a Christian organization, Cherisse opted for a well-rehearsed praise dance. “I felt defeated with my third-place finish; I knew I had lost the contest,” she recalled, “but I still decided to do my best in the question and answer segment.

“When my turn came, I was grateful for Toastmasters because I felt prepared. I began to use the tools that I learned over the past few months. I knew the mistress of ceremonies would ask the question twice as in a table topics competition. When she asked me the question the first time, I listened. When she asked the question the second time, I mentally organized my answer as I learned in Toastmasters. I answered my question with ease and felt that I had done well.”

At this point, Cherisse put the third place talent finish behind her and rekindled her original dream of reaching first runner-up in MS division. Instead the mistress of ceremonies announced the winner in MS category was Cherisse Branch. “I was in total shock. All I could do was look at my family with my eyes full of tears,” Cherisse remembered.

Still, there was more to come. Next the pageant crowned the queen supreme winner, the person with the highest total score during the pageant. Cherisse was crowned yet again. Next the member of Millennium Toastmasters Club will head to Dallas, Texas in July for the final of the National Plus America Pageant.

“I am grateful that I chose to join Toastmasters,” said Cherisse. “I know in my heart they played a vital part in me becoming MS South Carolina Plus America Supreme 2017!!”

Brian Woolf Donates Books To Help Fund D-58 Prison Club Initiative

March 2, 2017 by editor

Brian Woolf, DTM, witnessed scores of Toastmasters “find their voice” and develop leadership skills. His experiences recently culminated in two related events: a labor of love and an act of generosity.

Woolf joined the Waitemata Club in Auckland, New Zealand shortly after it chartered in Nov 1965. He remained a member until 1974 when he came to business school in the United States. After a two-year hiatus, Woolf joined a club in Indianapolis. Since then he has been active clubs in IN, OH, TN, NC, and SC. He was also an active club member in Ireland for a few years when consulting there. On occasion, extensive international work and travel precluded active membership.

Over the years, he garnered six district speech titles. In 2003, he was one the nine finalists in the International Speech Contest.  Additionally, the Harvard MBA authored four books on marketing. His fifth title, The Speaker’s Toolbox: 47 Tools to Build Better Speeches, published in 2016, took a full year in the making. In the process, he viewed 300 contest videos, analyzing patterns, styles, and techniques.

“I wrote this book as I one I wished I had early in my speaking career,” explained Woolf. “I endeavored to include all that is not covered in the Toastmasters manuals. This the second half of a speaker’s education: things we can learn from world champions and those who compete for the title.”

Woolf explained the purpose of this book is to help speakers speak better. After explaining why audiences’ minds wander, he provides 47 tools used by speakers to attract and maintain interest and attention. Each tool is briefly described, followed by many examples from speeches. The book ends with 11 speeches that illustrate the various tools in use.

It was shortly after the publication date when Woolf encountered officials from Allendale Correctional Institution, home of the first Toastmasters club in a South Carolina correctional facility. They spoke at the D-58 fall conference. “I found their story quite moving,” Woolf recalled. It triggered a memory of a visit to a district conference Oregon. “The Toastmaster who headed that district’s prison program was caring, compelling, and convincing. She spoke of the benefits the prison members had received. Hearing her, and hearing about the program, left a permanent impression on me.”

“My experience with Toastmasters is it gives one hope,” said Woolf.  “Preparing a speech occupies a mind while learning a new skill. All roles in a club meeting teach communication skills. That is why I decided Toastmasters clubs in correctional facilities provide a fabulous way to give inmates skills they need when then come out.  And they get excitement, hope, critical thinking, education–and some fun—while members of the club.”

Yvonne Wilkins-Smith, Associate Warden at Ridgeland Correctional Institution, witnessed the excitement in their club, which is the second in a SC correctional facility. Chartered in September 30, 2016 the club had rapid results. She said already sees “tremendous effects in self-esteem and confidence.”   Other inmates see it too and are requesting permission to visit the club. “The enthusiasm is contagious,” according to the associate warden.

While attending TLI recently, Woolf noted a flyer soliciting donations to support clubs at correctional facilities. That prompted an idea. For any $20.00 donation to the District-58 correctional facilities, the donor received a copy of The Speaker’s Toolbox: 47 Tools to Build Better Speeches. The price of the book is $20.  The offer to attendees proved so successful, he promised to repeat the offer at the D-58 spring conference in April.

His largesse is vital. Some inmate members are unable to pay their membership dues.  According to Toastmasters International, founder Ralph C. Smedley “saw a need for the men in the community to learn how to speak, conduct meetings, plan programs and work on committees, and he wanted to help them.” Brian Woolf, DTM, took his labor of love—the book he spent a year developing—and used it to continue Smedley’s goals—and to fund hope.

When Your Audience Takes Offense

February 14, 2017 by editor

As we transfer skills from Toastmasters to the outside world, public criticism can come our way. Maybe we misspeak or make an innocent error. Maybe we hold a controversial view. Or maybe we offend someone. What we say next can shape the way people see us and determine the outcome. Sometimes a good mea culpa goes a long way to restoring trust. It helps to know our options.

D–58 Ambassadors Launch “Cultural” Exchanges

December 6, 2016 by editor

ambassadorLaunched at the Fall Conference, the district ambassador program burst forth in November, in spite of Hurricane Matthew’s aftermath, Thanksgiving, Black Friday and other distractions. Five district-58 Toastmasters amassed 17 visits to 14 clubs.

Ambassador of the Year will be announced at the Spring Conference.  Also, anyone who has completed three visits by then will be awarded his or her certificate on stage; two people have already completed the requisite three visits. However, members will have until June 30th to complete their visits.

Bob Swarner, Club Growth Director, explained: “Our biggest growth is the day we join a Toastmasters club.  Our next biggest growth is the day we start participating outside of our home club.  The goal of the Ambassadors Program is to encourage members to take that second step and experience all that Toastmasters has to offer.”
